About Creative Commons

Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization that provides free, public copyright licenses that creators can use to grant permission to others to use their work under certain conditions. It's not an alternative to copyright, but rather, it's a way for creatives such as yourself  to manage how their work is shared and reused while still retaining copyright ownership. Essentially, Creative Commons allows creators to say, "Here's my work, and you can use it, but here are the rules."

Creative Commons allow you to easily and legally share your works online. It builds upon copyright to create a more equitable, accessible, and innovative world.

Creative Commons Licenses & Conditions on Jamendo

Creative Commons licenses are formulated by integrating four different conditions. Depending on their combination, a Creative Commons license can consist of a single condition or a blend of multiple conditions, specifying how the song can be used at no cost.

Jamendo supports the following licenses and their combinations:

License

Description

BY - Attribution

Per the CC website, "this license enables reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use."

Every CC license on Jamendo starts with the condition BY, which means that the user of your music must give appropriate credit to you, the artist, and add a link to the CC license of the track in question.

SA - ShareAlike

CC states that, "this license enables reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use. If you remix, adapt, or build upon the material, you must license the modified material under identical terms."

The user of your music is allowed to remix, transform, or build upon the CC registered material IF, and only if, the user distributes her/his creation under the CC license as your original work.

NC - NonCommercial

CC states that "this license enables reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator."

This indicates that your music track cannot be used for commercial purposes by the user. Commercial use refers to any use that is primarily aimed at generating profit or financial gain.

ND - NoDerivatives

According to the CC website, "this license enables reusers to copy and distribute the material in any medium or format in unadapted form only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator."

As a result, this means that  user cannot remix, transform, or build upon the original work if they intend to distribute the resulting creation.

 Jamendo Tip

Jamendo does not support the CC0 license type. C0 is a Creative Commons license that has no conditions at all. It allows the free use of the artwork and is therefore similar to the Public Domain. Read more about CC0 here.
