Getting Started

About Jamendo

In the ever-evolving landscape of music distribution, independent artists are constantly seeking platforms that not only showcase their work but also provide opportunities for exposure and revenue. One such platform is Jamendo, a unique music service that caters specifically to independent musicians and their audiences.

Founded in 2005, Jamendo is a music platform that allows independent artists to share their music with a global audience. It operates under a Creative Commons licensing model, which means that artists can choose how their music is used and shared. This approach empowers musicians to retain control over their work while still reaching listeners around the world.

 Jamendo Tip

Creative Commons empowers artists and creators like you to share your work freely and legally. It enhances traditional copyright to foster a more fair, accessible, and innovative environment.

Who is Jamendo for?

Jamendo is a platform that supports independent artists by providing a space for royalty-free music.  You can simply sign up by creating an account,  upload your music and submit it to our monetization programs.

We won't be asking for your music samples. The only two requirements are that you are the rights holder or represent the rights holder(s) of all the music you submit, and that your music is royalty-free. If you meet this criteria, simply create your account on the Jamendo Artist platform to get started.

Our Services

Jamendo Music

Jamendo Music is a platform that allows independent artists to share their music with a global audience for free.
All music uploaded to Jamendo is published under a Creative Commons license, meaning listeners can legally stream, download, and share the music, depending on the specific terms chosen by the artist. This open licensing is important because it empowers musicians to maintain control over their work while promoting creativity, collaboration, and accessibility. It also allows fans, content creators, and other users to use music legally without the complications of traditional copyright restrictions.

Royalty-free Music

Jamendo is a music platform that specializes in licensing of royalty-free music and in order to submit your music, you need to certify that it is royalty-free.

The term royalty-free doesn’t mean that as an artist, you won't get paid or lose your rights to your music. Rather, it means that if you choose to submit your music to one of our monetization platforms, as an artist, you can earn money through one-time license sales and retain full copyright of your music, while your customers can license your music without having to pay recurring fees to a Collective Management Organization (C.M.O) or Performance Rights Organization (P.R.O).

This makes Jamendo an ideal solution for artists who want to distribute and monetize their music easily and globally and clients who need high-quality music with a simple, legal license and no extra fees.

 Jamendo Tip

Royalty-free doesn't mean that your music can be used free of charge. It means that clients who license your music will not need to pay recurring fees to a Collective Management Organization (C.M.O) or Performance Rights Organization (P.R.O).

Collection Societies

If you're already registered with a C.M.O or a P.R.O, it doesn't necessarily mean that you won't be able to submit your music to Jamendo's monetization services.

Whether you can participate and use Jamendo's monetization services largely depends on the collection society you're registered with, as the conditions vary a lot among the C.M.Os and P.R.O's in different countries.

The collection societies in some countries are very flexible and will likely allow you to indicate if you want to manage your licenses on Jamendo without them (e.g. most C.M.Os in the US). The C.M.Os and P.R.O's in other countries, however, collect royalties only for the songs that you've registered with them, but not for those, that you have not registered with them (e.g. Italy).
And the C.M.Os and P.R.O's in even other countries claim the right to manage the royalties of all of your tracks, even those that you have not registered with them (e.g. Germany).

 Jamendo Tip

If you are registered with a collection society, you must check the details of your agreement with your C.M.O and P.R.O and inform that you're considering uploading your music to Jamendo before doing so.

You aren't registered with a Collection Society

If you are not yet registered with a C.M.O or a P.R.O, there are a few details that you should consider before making this step:

  • A C.M.O or a P.R.O is a great help in collecting royalties for your music across countries, however, it is not mandatory to register with a collection society in order to distribute,  protect and monetize your music.
  • Each country has a national collecting society. You do not have to register with one of your country, but rather you can choose with which country you'd like to register.
  • Many independent companies are offering similar services. The European Union has recently created a new status called Independent Management Entity (I.M.E), which allows private, commercial companies to collect artist's royalties and thus offer a wider range of options to artists.
